AMD64 + Debian = Dream Machine

Back from Bend, back to blogging
Ah, refreshed. Jeanne and I had a fantastic time in Bend this past weekend. Though it was hot and at times humid, the fellowship and breathtaking scenic views far outweighed being physically uncomfortable. The Lord is awesome! Here are but a few pics that we took from our stay with Tab, Marshall, and Caedmon.

Bend

Zidane = Verb
I was having a quick chat with a few co-workers a little while ago. One jokingly admitted that during a mildly frustrating customer conference call he wanted to 'Zidane them'. It sure didn't take long to make the Zidane headbutt a verbism.

Zidane apologizes
It's good to read that he explicitely apologized to the kiddos of the world. No regrets though about having done it because of insults to his mother and sister. I'm still curious what he might have said the Marco.
Christian comedian on Nightline
Monday night ABC's Nightline did a segment on Brad Stine, a Christian comedian. An interesting bit to say the least. A few things bothered me about it.
The segment made certain to highlight him as 'still an angry comic...Christian conservatives against those liberals ruining this country'. That's a pretty strong statement considering we don't actually hear Stine himself professing this. All we really hear Stine talk about is his growing up years, how more and more people are willing to spend money of things more wholesome and encouraging, and that with today's media 'when it comes to getting on television we're [Christians are] ignored'.
The reporter refutes that last statement made by Stine with the following response:
Wow! A clip of a shown-once-a-year 20/30 year old cartoon (don't get me wrong, I do like Charlie Brown) and a clip from a show that was completely lacking in any sense of Christian morality are the best examples the segment can come with trying to defend 'American TV's assumption'!? I challenge the reporter(s) to find more convincing evidence that indeed Christian's are getting a fair 'crack at the media'. I don't believe they can or will. Otherwise, they need to stick simply to just sharing a unique story about a Christian man who has found what the Lord has called him to do. I don't need to hear their political interpretation of Christian conservatives and poor defenses about the media being Christian enough.

A good editorial about the joys of Italy winning the World Cup over France. And I agree completely about his little snippet on Zidane.

End to Win98 support may boost desktop Linux.
I don't know if it will but we'll see. I say this because who is still running 'please reboot your machine everyday' 98? If people are still running 98 it's either because they are too lazy to upgrade or because they just don't know enough about computers to change anything, or both. Well, now's the time for these folks to be brave and upgrade there OS's appropriately to linux. There are linux distros out there (Ubuntu, Mandrake) that make the transition between the two OS's a bit more comfortable.

Slashdot has posted a brief book review about Python's WxPython GUI tools. I haven't done much with the GUI tools but if it's half as fun as programming 'non-GUI' python or Zope products than I'm there. I just might have to add this book to my library. I'm sure my linux books won't mind.

It is a little disappointing to see the World Cup conclude the way it did. Obviously the final needed to end at some point but how more fulfilling it is to see a game won on goals scored during the game rather than on a penalty kick shootout.
But that isn't the most disappointing part. The most disappointing part is seeing Zidane, who some have said is the best overall player to step out on the field in the past ten years, the star and captain of his nation's team, in double overtime, the game ready to go to PK's, him being of the most consistent PK takers in the world, lose his cool apparently over something said by Italian player Marco Materazzi.
I have played soccer since I was 5 and I understand that it is part of the game, as well as in other sports, to exchange heated words with opponents and even with teammates. But do words ever warrant an extreme physical reaction as was demonstrated by the French star? I'm talking strictly about the exchange of words on the field, court, arena, where a sporting event is taking place. I don't think so at all, especially at the professional level where, yes, they are being paid to win, but they are role models as well. And especially so when it's the World Cup final, seen by the whole world, 10 minutes to go before a shootout, you are the Captain, you are the star of the tournament, etc.. Wow!
BUT it'll be interesting to read what it was that Materazzi said, and to see if Zidane can redeem himself and do the classy, sportmanship thing with an apology. And the same with Maternazzi if what he said was indeed completely out of line. Take a look at this to see just how nasty of player Materazzi can be.
